Visit from the cast of Sweat
On April 25, actors Monique Gaffney and Markuz Rodriguez from the San Diego Repertory Theatre came to the Black Box to talk about their experiences performing in the Lynn Nottage play Sweat. With them was Kim Montelilbano Heil, the Associate Artistic Director from the REP.
In addition to talking about their journey as actors, Kim led a discussion about EDI (Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion) in casting. These are important conversations to have!

Fall 2019 shows at City College
Hello, after much soul-searching and reading of plays, we have come up with our selections for Fall 2019. Please know that THESE ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE.
Auditions are Thursday, August 22.
Just Like Us by Karen Zacarias
"What makes us American?"
Based on Helen Thorpe's bestselling book, this documentary-style play follows four Latina teenage girls in Denver--two of whom are documented and two who are not--through young adulthood. Their close-knit friendships begin to unravel when immigration status dictates the girls' opportunities, or lack thereof. When a political firestorm arises, each girl's future becomes increasingly complicated. Just Like Us poses difficult, yet essential questions about what makes us American.
Black Box Theatre, September 27 - October 6

She Kills Monsters by Qui Nguyen
"Man, your sister was really into some geeky sh*t."
A comedic romp into the world of fantasy role-playing games, She Kills Monsters tells the story of Agnes Evans as she leaves her childhood home in Ohio following the death of her teenage sister, Tilly. When Agnes finds Tilly's Dungeons & Dragons notebook, she stumbles into a journey of discovery and action-packed adventure in the imaginary world that was Tilly's refuge. In this high-octane dramatic comedy laden with homicidal fairies, nasty ogres, and '90s pop culture, She Kills Monsters pays homage to the geek and warrior within us all.

Performance of credible--happening THIS AFTERNOON!
Tired of the rain? Come to San Diego City College at 2:00 pm TODAY and witness the special, one-performance-only event of credible, a world premiere play by Lily Padilla and Alanna Bledman. Five City College students are performing in, so come out and support them.
This original play is a co-production between San Diego City College Department of Theatre and the University of San Diego Theatre Department. credible is inspired by Luigi Pirandello's absurdist masterpiece Six Characters in Search of an Author. This play began in a USD class in Fall 2018, during which time students developed scenes based on their own lives. It was influenced by the Brett Kavanaugh hearings and our lived experiences of what or who is and isn't considered credible. This production includes conversations and explorations about sexual assault, racism, privilege, power, and embodiment. It is recommended for mature audiences.
The director is the amazing Lisa Berger (Metamorphoses).
