San Diego
City College Drama Program Presents
Almost,
Maine
Saville
Theatre | April 15, 16, 17, 22, 23, 24
SAN
DIEGO—March 31, 2016—The San Diego City College Dramatic Arts Program presents
the romantic comedy Almost, Maine by playwright and actor John Cariani.
Performances are Fridays and Saturdays, April 15, 16, 22, and 23
at 8:00 p.m. and Sundays, April 17 and 24 at 2:00 p.m. in the Saville Theatre
at City College. The play features nineteen student actors from San Diego City
College and is directed by Professor Ashley Kobza.
Almost, Maine is made up of eleven short vignettes whose characters overlap
throughout each scene, in the vein of the films Love Actually or Valentine’s
Day. Each scene explores different facets of love, including love lost,
love won, and the love that got away. A visitor to Almost, Maine might
describe the story in the following way: "One clear, cold Friday night, in the middle of winter, while the northern lights hover in the sky above, Almost's residents find themselves falling in love in the strangest ways. Knees are bruised. Hearts are broken. Love is lost, found, and confounded. And life for the people of Almost, Maine will never be the same."
According to Director Kobza, “The action centers on the desire to
love and be loved. Each person in this play, like all of us, wants to be
loved. Some of them are certain that they know what that means while
others are actively searching for that meaning.”
Kobza explained that, “stylistically, Almost Maine falls
into the category of Magic Realism. The play is a realistic comedy and then all
of a sudden it’s not. We see this represented throughout the play as characters
often deal with or have physical manifestations of their feelings, i.e., a
(literally) broken heart and emotional baggage. I think it’s an
interesting choice, to write a play about love in this way, because really love
itself is magical realism.”
The delightful and poignant comedy Almost, Maine promises
to be a heartwarming, enjoyable event.
