Opening Night at the Globe--free tickets!

Join us for Opening Night!

Thursday, May 12th at 8pm

(Standby line will form before 7pm)

Mala

By Melinda Lopez

Directed by David Dower

She was always the good daughter. But now her mother, in the twilight of her life, calls her “mala”—bad to the core. Melinda Lopez’s funny, brutally honest, and ultimately cathartic solo play is an irreverent exploration of how we live, cope, and survive in a challenging moment, and what happens when we strive to be good but don’t always succeed. Theatermania calls it “deeply affecting,” while The Boston Globe named it “one of the best plays of the year. Piercingly honest and exquisitely moving.”

To sign up for the standby line, please fill out the form below.

Free tickets to Blue/Orange at the 10th Avenue Playhouse

Hi Hello Hi,

I hope your week is off to a great start. My name is Kian Kline-Chilton, I'm a director here in town.

I am very excited to be currently working on Joe Penhall’s Olivier-Award winning sardonic comedy, Blue Orange, produced by Fenix Theatre Collective and I would love to personally invite you to join us for the show.

BLUE/ORANGE brings audiences into a modern psychiatric hospital in London, where a ferocious contest of wills is occurring between two doctors and a young black patient, Christopher. It’s day 28 of his detention and he wants out, yet he thinks oranges are blue and a Ugandan dictator is his father. His doctor, Bruce, says keep him in and he’s not stable. But the senior consultant, Robert, believes that Christopher’s problems are ethnocentric and he needs to go back to his “community”. And yet the entire time we wonder, who is actually in charge of fate and is anyone actually right in their own mind. Biting, ambiguous and hilarious - this play presents a crucial and urgent depiction of race, mental health and power.

The show begins performances tomorrow and runs through April 16th.  It’s a one-of-a-kind experience you don’t want to miss!

You can reserve tickets here: Blue/OrangeFenix is about making theatre accessible so the tickets are free. If you want to leave a donation, however much you want to give, you can and enjoy the show. It's really important to me that students are able to see theatre so please share with them!

It’s been an exciting process, I'm really looking forward to sharing this.I hope that you are able to come.

Best,

Kian Kline-Chilton

Want to become certified in fight choreography??

This is an AMAZING opportunity.

Hello All!

I am emailing about a hugely exciting opportunity for our program in Dramatic Arts at City College-- we are one of three institutions (and the only college!) accepted for the first year of the Society of American Fight Director's Educate, Expand and Empower Initiative. If you want more info on the program, you can look here: https://safd.org/

This means that we will have a trained fight master (Dave Gonzalez, who works with professional theatres in Chicago) and two assistants coming to our campus to train 14 students in unarmed combat for the stage. This program will end with the opportunity to certify in unarmed combat through SAFD for FREE. This is really a great opportunity-- usually this certification is very expensive, requiring travel to workshops, training and certification fees. This is something that will also look very good on future acting resumes, as well as offering a start in a really interesting/marketable theatre field.

The program will run June 6th-10th at City College, from 9:00 am-4:00 pm. You must be available for the full training (no exceptions!), since you will need to fulfill a full 30 hours to be able to certify. You will also need to be vaccinated and boosted (if eligible), and wear a mask the full time, as well as take a PCR test prior to the first workshop day.

If you would like to participate, please fill out the application here: https://forms.gle/QZ4Xq4rhHtMHf9HM9

We anticipate a high demand for the limited number of spots, and will be making choices based on your status as a major in our program, how close you are to transferring, and your written responses to the application questions-- if you are not a major and are still interested, please do fill out the form, as there may be room! If you know of someone who should have received this email and didn't for some reason, please feel free to forward it.

Thank you all! Please reach out to me with any questions at all.

Best,

Kate

An Invitation: The Great Khan Final Dress

Wed Mar 2, at 7:00PM

The San Diego REP team are delighted to invite the Faculty and Staff of SDCCD to a performance of The Great Khan.

The Great Khan is a timeless story about growing up, discovering your true self and the challenges of being Black in America. Loveable gamer nerd Jayden meets quirky dreamer Ant in very unusual circumstances… Both teens are trying to figure out how to define themselves — and then Genghis Khan shows up.

Hailed as a "fully realized fantasia" by Broadway World and "brilliant" by Talkin’ Broadway, The Great Khan is the new comedy from award-winning playwright Michael Gene Sullivan. This provocative, playful work was featured in San Diego REP’s Black Voices Reading Series last year, and was an immediate hit. It was then swiftly picked up to be fully staged as part of the REP’s current season and we can’t wait to share it with you.

Wed Mar 2 at 7:00PM
Location: San Diego Repertory Theatre
79 Horton Plz, San Diego, CA 92101

Discount tickets to the La Jolla Playhouse!

Bhangin’ It is an exhilarating new musical that celebrates the traditions we inherit from yesterday and those we create for tomorrow. When a young woman finds her identity cannot be defined by checking a box, she sets off on a quest to dance to her own beat. Drawing from competitive Bhangra and mixing it with other Indian and Western dance forms alike, Bhangin’ It is a brash, intoxicating and joyous musical for America today.
