Meet the Faculty: Introducing Farrell Foreman!

Farrell J. Foreman is directing two of the original plays as part of the Festival of New Plays at City College. He also teaches three sections of English.
Professor Foreman is co-founder and CEO of Bear Arts Foundation, an organization dedicated to the support of theatres and writers of color in the creation of new work.  In June of 2010, Bear produced a 24-hour ten-minute play festival at San Diego State University which included resident as well as “Long Distance” plays. Artists from around the country participated in Spoken Word, The Meaning of Community and Theatre, and a Playwrights' Roundtable. Foreman’s plays have been produced at theatres, colleges, and community centers throughout the country.  His awards include The National Endowment Fellowship for Playwriting, The Samuel Goldwyn Award for Playwriting, and an American College Theatre Festival Lorraine Hansberry Award for Playwriting.
Farrell earned his MFA in Playwriting from UC San Diego, and he has taught English at San Diego City College since 2000. We're lucky to have him working with us!

Meet the faculty: Introducing Jeannie Galioto!

Jeannie Galioto teaches Beginning Costuming and will design the costumes for the Festival of New Plays and Almost, Maine.

Ms. Galioto has an MFA in Costume Design and has been a freelance costume designer for twenty-five years. Credits include productions for the San Diego Repertory Theatre, Diversionary Theatre (where she won a Patte award for Best Costume Design), The Guthrie Lab, Ion Theatre, Mixed Blood Theatre, Moxie Theatre, Youth Theatre Northwest, and Shakespeare in the Park to name a few. She was an invited guest speaker at The Costume Colloquium in Florence, Italy and she was the costume design assistant for the multiple Tony award winning show Memphis. In addition to freelance designing, she has taught at The Art Institute, University of San Diego, San Diego State University, University of California Irvine, The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, and Palomar College. She has also worked with the Costume Design graduate program at The University of California San Diego. A few career highlights include creating the hats for the film Drop Dead Gorgeous and working on costumes for the band, Slipknot.

Meet the Faculty: Janet Hayatshahi!

Janet Hayatshahi teaches DRAM 105 and 137 online.

She is an actor, director, choreographer, and educator.  She served as Associate Artistic Director of San Diego’s Sledgehammer Theatre and was an ensemble member of the company.  She was also a member of the ensemble of Chicago’s Eclipse Theatre Company.

In addition to teaching at San Diego City College, Janet has also taught in the theatre departments of Pomona College, University of California, San Diego, San Diego State University, and Grossmont College. She has also worked as teaching artist for the Old Globe Theatre and the La Jolla Playhouse. 

Her theatrical interests lie in ensemble-driven, collaboratively-created works, blending a physical approach and embodied practice with text and story-telling, particularly with new works or re-inventions of classic tales.

Meet the faculty: Introducing Ashley Kobza!

Ashley Kobza teaches DRAM 103, Acting for the Non-Major, and is the director of the spring production of Almost, Maine.

Ashley Kobza is teaching artist specializing in physical theatre, comedy, and the creation of new works.

She graduated in 2012 with a Master of Fine Arts in Acting and New Work from The Ohio State University. She has also trained extensively with the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford, Dell Arte International in Blue Lake, and both IO and Second City in Chicago.

As teacher Ashley employs power of play and laughter to inspire vulnerability and risk taking in the classroom.  In DRAM 103 students can expect to dive head first into the world of performance including: improvisation, beginning script analysis, performance art, and creating new works both alone and within an ensemble.  

We are lucky to have Ashley on our faculty!

Auditions for Almost, Maine and the Festival of New Works is Thursday, January 28 at 6:00 in the Saville Theatre. Prepare a 1-2 minute contemporary monologue.
